Graphic & Media Workers union
The Graphic Workers’ Union which is a part of LO (The Swedish Trade Union Federation) was founded 1973, when bookbinders, lithographers and typographers merged into one union. Even if union work has looked different during the years, the idea has all the time been the same: We will be stronger, if we improve and develop the members' rights in the work places.

You can find the unions’ about 18 000 professional, active members in printing works, composing rooms and bookbinderies. They work in repro companies and newspapers, in advertising, web- and media companies. A lot of people work in packaging-, envelope- and wallpaper factories and also within the Samhall Group (Samhall provides work-life rehabilitation for persons who have been out of work due to illness or for some other reason need support in returning to work).

The graphical business has since the 60-ies experienced a continuous technical change.
In many work places, an improved working environment and a more developing working life has been created. Heavy and monotonous moments have disappeared, the use of chemicals has decreased, but the result is also a great loss of job opportunities. At the same time new ones have come. Who could, 10-15 years ago, believe there would be web-designers among us in the 90-ies? The information- and media sector grows and only to mention Stockholm, approx 10 000 persons work within this sector. Attracting them, is our new challenge.

The culture and structures of the new work places are different from what we are familiar with. Younger, stronger and more fearless people call for other things from the union than earlier generations. The challenge is to combine the new demands with the already existing. Therefore we have created the GF Media Union. Our ambition is to give those who work within web production and the media sector a union they can identify themselves with.
